FAQ

Who owns Sheffield Landfill?

The Landfill is owned by US Ecology, which was acquired by Republic Services in 2022.

When did the Landfill operate?

US Ecology operated the 46-acre facility from 1967-1983.

What types of waste did the Landfill accept?

The Landfill contains approximately 165,000 cubic yards of industrial, laboratory and agricultural hazardous wastes.

What is the remediation history?

In 1985, the Landfill entered into an administrative order with EPA, which included requirements for remedial investigations and feasibility studies. This focused on corrective actions to mitigate risks and addressing ways to be protective of human health. In 1990, the Landfill completed investigations and proposed a clean-up plan to EPA. The plan identified alternatives for source control and groundwater remediation. Corrective actions included construction of subsurface barrier walls to direct groundwater away from waste and capping the landfill surface. A groundwater extraction and treatment system addressed a contaminated groundwater plume in a shallow aquifer beneath the facility. The Landfill completed construction of these corrective actions by 1995. The facility remains permitted and is monitored by the state’s RCRA program.

What is the site’s status?

The Landfill developed a long-term stewardship program in collaboration with the EPA in 2020. Today, the site is the first in the country to approach the end of its 30-year monitoring obligations with the state and have all other RCRA obligations complete.

Who regulates the facility?

U.S. EPA and Illinois EPA
